More trailer parks planned

Having more or less given up on plans to create a series of marinas along both sides of the Baja California peninsula and the west coast of the mainland — those installations built are now for sale — the government agency Fonatur now is promoting the construction of trailer parks.

Automotive tourism to Mexico has declined in recent years, apparently as a result of the complications involved with bringing cars into the country. Mexicans living abroad, it seems, would drive down and fly home, selling their cars before they left. Vehicles bought in the USA cost less to acquire and can be sold at a handsome profit. In order to discourage this, restrictions on temporary imports have been imposed. This, in turn, has discouraged motoring tourists. Fonatur, however, seems to believe that lack of trailer parks is keeping people away. The agency plans to build many of these and sell them to private investors. It hopes that then more private firms will start to build trailer parks.
