Medical tourism could become a billion-dollar business in Mexico within the next five years according to Tourism Minister Rodolfo Elizondo. Speaking to the press, Elizondo said efforts are being made to obtain for all private hospitals international certification. Most hospitals in Mexico are public, but patients who can afford private institutions usually prefer these. According to figures gathered by the ministry, surgical procedures at private hospitals in Mexico cost only about half what they would in the United States. While language could be a problem, many physicians and surgeons in Mexico have studied abroad.
