Oscar Fitch, who has headed the National Tourism Promotion Council — also known as the Mexican Government Tourism Office — since 2007, reportedly has submitted his resignation to President Felipe Calderon. This has not been officially confirmed. The organization Fitch has directed is responsible for promoting Mexico as a tourism destination.
Last year tourism declined sharply as a result of the worldwide recession, the flu scare last spring, and the thousands killed (none of them tourists) in the battle against organized crime. Fitch is scheduled to appear before the Senate this week to discuss the situation. Rumor has it that this is why he has resigned.
