Informed sources now tell us that Tourism Minister Rodolfo Elizondo will not be leaving after all. For several months these same informed sources have insisted that his departure was imminent and that he soon would be the Mexican Ambassador to Portugal.
Now it appears that President Felipe Calderon, who last year proposed abolishing the Tourism Ministry, prefers not to be obliged to appoint a new minister. Congress refused to abolish the ministry, as the president requested. Keeping Elizondo also pleases the private sector, which prefers to continue working with people it knows. Any change at the top probably also would mean new sub-secretaries who, in turn, would name new department heads and soon down the line. Now informed sources doubt that a new general director for the Mexican Tourism Board will be named.
