Although the country’s half-dozen airlines have yet to do as well as they did in 2008, they are flying high. Most reported more than 70 percent of their seats sold on scheduled flights during 2011. Leading the pack was Magnicharters (now operating scheduled flights) with an 82.7 percent occupancy level. Aeroméxico just missed the 70 percent mark and poor, non-jet Aeromar barely made 40 percent. Big question is what will happen to Mexicana, grounded since 2010 by financial woes. Employees are demanding that the government step in, pointing out that during the past decade one airline has gone bankrupt every year. At one time, both Aeroméxico and Mexicana were operated by the government, but later sold to private investors.
