New England Leaf-Peeping: Day 4

The view from our Beachmere Inn room on a rainy day.

Day four in search of New England’s leaf-peeping hidden gems was worse than Day three. Rain and fog covered most of New England and our entire three-and-a-half-hour drive from the Litchfield Inn to Ogunquit, Maine.
Many of the restaurants were closed but my wife and I found a food hidden gem in Sundaes at the Beach in Wells, the next town up from Ogunquit. We both had a grilled lobster roll that I can still taste two hours later. A quarter pound of Maine lobster meat, lightly dressed and served on a grilled bun. Add to that some excellent fries and a scoop of Kennebunkport Kahlua Chip ice cream (free when you purchase a lobster roll) and that’s as good as it gets. The award-winning ice cream is handcrafted on site by the owners.
Sundaes at the Beach is at 231 Post Road (Route 1) in Wells, Maine. The website is www.SundaesAtTheBeach.com. The restaurant closes at the end of October for the winter but if you want to make this one of your stops try it in the summer or during leaf-peeping season.
My wife and I have a great view of the Atlantic Ocean from our room at Ogunquit’s Beachmere Inn, which is only about 80 minutes from Boston’s Logan Airport and about three hours from Hartford’s Bradley Field. It’s a short walk to Perkins Cove’s shops and restaurants, including Barnacle Billy’s, a Wawer family favorite. We have made the drive to Ogunquit to dine on whole Maine lobster at Barnacle Billy’s every time we come to New England since our first trip here in 1988.
The Beachmere is at 62 Beachmere Place. The website is www.BeachmereInn.com.
The weather is supposed to clear up tomorrow. If it does, I will be off early in the morning in search of more leaf-peeping hidden gems where the color is awesome and the crowds are small.
