Leaf-Peeping in New England: Day 2

Litchfield’s First Congregational Church.

The Cornwall Covered Bridge.

Kent Falls.

A pond at the Sharon Audubon Center.

My wife and I started our day in Litchfield, Connecticut. The bucolic Litchfield Hills are still a week or so away from peak season but there is still a lot of color. The Litchfield Hills, which include Litchfield, Kent, Washington, Cornwall, Sharon, Warren and Lakeville, are still one of my favorite places. I grew up an hour from this area and it is still a place where time holds on to its past.
We ate lunch at the Fife & Drum in Kent and an excellent dinner at the Interlaken Inn in Lakeville. We’re in the Paul Newman Room at the inn for the night Tomorrow, we are back to Litchfield after more leaf-peeping and a stay at the Litchfield Inn. Wednesday and Thursday we will be at the Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit, Maine — one of my favorite haunts when I get back to New England.
Yankee Magazine voted Kent the best place for foliage viewing in New England, There are so many hidden gems in this area and if you visit during the week, you can avoid the crowds that swarm to places such as the Mohawk Trail in Western Massachusetts. Almost any back road you take in this area of northwestern Connecticut, you will find a kaleidoscope of color.
Kent Falls in Kent Falls State Park is one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. I’m going back in another week when there should be stunning mixture of reds, orange, yellow and green.
Even if the foliage isn’t spectacular, this area is still beautiful and filled with history.
