Having been unable to sell at a fixed price the marinas built under the Nautical Stairway program, the government development agency Fonatur now plans to peddle them at auction.
The Stairway program was to be the “Cancun” for the administration of President Vicente Fox (2000-2006). Planned were some 30 marinas to be built an easy day’s sail from one to the next along the Baja California peninsula and on the mainland coast of the Sea of Cortes. Goal was to attract yachts from California. Only a dozen marinas actually were built. Eventually it was realized that the scheme would not float.
