Airports hurting

While the government reports that the travel industry is recovering after its worst year ever in 2009, airport statistics show otherwise. The number of passengers using the Mexico City airport during the first quarter was 6 percent less than during the same period last year. Acapulco was down 18 percent. To be fair, Acapulco can be reached by car from Mexico City almost as quickly as by air (when required early airport arrival, delays in recovering luggage and ground transportation are taken into account). And Acapulco is now a weekend getaway for the denizens of Mexico City. Hollywood prefers Los Cabos. Other declines were reported at airports in Monterrey and at northern border cities.
