Hotel rates fall

Hotel rates in Mexico fell by as much as one third last year according to Hotel Price Index published by online experts hotels.com. Oaxaca led the fall, its tariffs dropping by an average of 34 percent. In Cancun and Mazatlan, prices declined by about 23 percent while tariffs in neighboring Maya Riviera fell by only 14 percent. The declines reflect the overall state of the hospitality industry, which considered 2009 its worst year ever.

The figures reflect the amount guests actually paid, not the tariffs advertised by hotels. Online agency Expedia operates hotels.com.
