President Felipe Calderon and Tourism Minister Rodolfo Elizondo on Tuesday inspected the restored beaches at Cancun, severely eroded in recent years. The restoration project was controversial, many commentators arguing that the dredging of sand threatened other areas along the Caribbean shore and the overbuilding on Cancun Island meant that the beaches simply would erode again.
This was the second time in a week that Calderon joined Elizondo at an event and this time the president made a point of praising the minister. Last year, Calderon had urged that the ministry be abolished to reduce expenditures. Congress rejected the proposal. On Tuesday, Elizondo quashed rumors that he planned to resign, but noted that his future in the job depends on the president.
