During the past four years, tourism arrivals have increased by about 200,000, a growth of a scant 1.6 percent. Considering the present climate of insecurity, some might express amazement that there has been any growth at all. Biggest decline has been along the border, where violence is rampant. While more than 60 million intrepid souls did cross the line, if only for a few hours, that was nearly 18 million fewer than four years ago. True, part of the problem may be because Americans must now carry passports if they want to return to the USA. Most Americans do not have passports. This also may have affected the cruise business. Passenger arrivals have declined about 3 percent since 2006, when the current administration began.
